My half moon chocolate colored betta, Dali, was being a stud today and showing off.
The blue line behind his eyes don’t appear except when he’s showing off/protecting his territory.

This is for my Betta lovers. Bettas love planted tanks too. These are both 2 gallon planted tanks that look great. Even small planted aquariums look awesome!

The “bullet” betta mutation. Through the link provided above, you can also see another mutation referred to as the “Ranchu” betta.
I… don’t even…
whaaattt??? Wow. I hope they don’t try to breed this mutation.
That looks so uncomfortable for the poor fish! :/
I was active on ultimatebettas when this happened. A member there (Synirr) ended up being the owner of this fish. The auction on aquabid wanted $200 for her, I don’t know what she ended up paying but it certainly wasn’t that much.
People started judging her and going completely ape shit. She is one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated betta person I know, and had an interest in finding out if this mutation was genetic or not and all the hate was undeserved.
She didn’t breed her to “make more” as in sell mutated babies, she had a fascination with this particular bettas genetics and whether or not this was a passable trait.
The fish in question had no difficulty moving, eating, defecating, seeing, flaring, or producing eggs. She had no health problems because bettas do not use their tails to propel themselves, the only thing she did do was sometimes tilt side to side a bit. Essentially she had mild stabilization issues.
Honestly she’s no more deformed than a fantail goldfish.
I don’t remember if the spawn yielded anything, though.
x: i wish i’d been active in the betta community when that gal was alive(i think she passed a while back?).
yeah, it looks horrible. but Synirr wouldn’t have attempted breeding her at all if the gal wasn’t a happy fish. i’m sure she’d have culled any of the fry that came out deformed. was more curious to see if it was genetic, or just a defect on her, i think.
So here it is! Just a black outline so far, but by the end of the summer it will be colored! I’m absolutely in love with it!

Wild betta appreciation post!
“Betta” describes a genus, though it’s colloquially used to describe Betta splendens, the big-finned fish in every petstore. There’s actually around 65 different species within the genus.
L to R: B. brownorum, B. channoides, B. imbellis, B. macrostoma, B. rubra, and B. smaragdina.
